Wayne's parents & sister came for a visit last weekend and we took the Potomac Eagle Train Ride in Romney, West Virginia.
It was an absolutely beautiful day, sun still warm and autumn in it's peak. We've had quite a warm fall so far following a dry spell this summer so the leaves haven't turned much yet, but the breeze on your skin and leaves falling as you walk through the woods is still as exhilarating as expected.
We boarded the train at 1pm for a 3 hour ride along the South Potomac River/ WV Mountainside. Coffee in hand, we took seats in an empty car by the windows. The train, ran by a family owned business, was clad with blue and yellow paint, and variated car interiors, including one in pink!
The sites were wonderful.
Wayne's family friend's Mike & Karen joined us for the trip!
BALD EAGLE TROUGH
Lydian, Wayne's mother especially loves birds and was very excited for a chance to spot a bald eagle. We had our binoculars out, riding in an open cart, as we rode through the trough (a 45 minute span) eyes peeled for eagles. The first siting was a nest, high up in the tallest pine on the mountain across the river, then a white headed eagle perched in a tree - everyone tuned in closely! We saw several more, totaling 15 sitings, including one soaring along with us above the river! See if you can spot them in the pictures below.
The countryside did not disappoint, mountains in the background clad with fall foliage and rolling farmland was a beautiful October scene.
WEEKEND DIARY
It was such a wonderful pleasure to have family here for the weekend. We ended Friday with dinner at The Candle Wyck Inn in Keyser on the way home (amazing seafood and what a beautiful venue!). Then on Saturday we all joined Wayne for an antique auction, closing the day with friends and a big campfire. Wayne's sister brought apple crisp and we grilled. On Sunday we sent them off after a late brunch and walk through the gorgeous Valley Falls. It was sad to see them go but we're so thankful for family who come to visit!
