Things We Can Learn From (Hannah) People-Oriented People

August 17, 2016 Shyla Yoder

I got the privilege of standing beside this dear woman at her wedding this past weekend. She stood glorious at the alter with a crown on her head, worshipping her Father, sure of the man she vowed to marry. It was one of the most beautiful moments I've ever witnessed, not just because of the lovely surrounds or flowers in my hands, but because of the people that Hannah and Josh are and the love they not only have for each other but for others.

Hannah Vaughan is a special woman. I met her while volunteering in India. She joined me in month four of my service there and a time when I really needed her; I didn't know it at the time though. I went down to her room, which was across the lawn in another building from mine, knocked on her door, monsoon rain drizzling down my face and she answered, bright eyed, big smile, probably a laugh (a typical Vaughan thing and she exuberantly greeted me! I don't remember what it was - the quilted slipper booted american apparel she wore or her warmth - but I could sense the spirit in her and I loved her right away! I needed her camaraderie at that time and she was a source of prayer and connection for me. We have remained close ever since; there is an intimate connection between us.

Hannah is an advocate - a fighter. She is passionate about people rights and being the heart of God to people. She was there most nights in Ferguson when the riots were going on- standing between protestors and officers praying. That's who Hannah is. She doesn't ignore problems, she shows up, and she fights for what is right.

Wedding week is a crazy time for brides, we all know that. When you're hosting a lot of out of town wedding party members it creates another element to the week on top of that. You're excited to see your friends and want to catch up with them and spend quality time with them and your trying to juggle all the last minute details of your wedding (a.k.a. all the stuff that goes wrong) at the same time - while wanting everything to be perfect! It's a stressful time. I observed something beautiful this week while watching Hannah though.

While juggling the elements of her wedding (handling it like a boss), she never let the stress come out onto her relationships with people. She still treated people warmly and kindly; with respect -still looking you in the eye and seeing you. That is a quality that I want to have.

Hannah is a people-oriented person. She chooses people first. She sees them as important. (As opposed to task-oriented people like myself over here). And I think this is a large part of God's heart. When I ponder purpose in my life I think of the saying: Be a lover of God & the people He loves. God created man and they are His world, the most important thing. Shouldn't that be ours too? I think we lose sight of that amidst our daily tasks and need to survive. People are the most important priorities we can have on this earth besides God and what better way to know God's heart than to invest into the ones He loves. It has been a conscious effort to me to choose people more over the past 10 years, and I hope to inspire you to do it as well.

Let's invest into people more; give more priority to friendship and relationship. Let's try to see people the way that God sees them when we pass them by on the street instead of just heading onto our next task. Let's make it a statute in our lives to always show value to people (because they are valuable) no matter what other things are going on. And lets, like Hannah, advocate for people - stand up for those that have no voice, sympathize with those who are afflicted, and realize that people are the greatest priority we can have on this earth.

Here is some inspiration from people with similar hearts as Hannah.

“The desire to reach the stars is ambitious. The desire to reach hearts is wise and most possible.”
— Maya Angelou
“Human beings are more alike than we are unalike. Let us see that and ... cherish ... the differences. Because the differences are superficial ... they should delight us.”
— Maya Angelou
“Immature love says: ‘I love you because I need you.’ Mature love says: ‘I need you because I love you.”
— Eric Fromm
“There is nothing in which I habitually find greater satisfaction than in the consciousness of serving my friends.”
— Cicero
“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention.”
— Khalil Gibram
“We are not born for ourselves alone.”
— Cicero
“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”
— Pericles
“We do not say that a man who takes no interest in [others] is a man who minds his own business: We say that he has no business here at all.”
— Pericles
“If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.”
— Johann Von Goethe
“[Let] us all [struggle to] prove that ... genuine brotherhood and peace [is] more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.”
— Nelson Mandela
“[Let us create a] society that will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood.”
— Martin Luther King Jr.
“The only way to get past ... feelings of powerlessness and insignificance is by connecting with other people. ... I advise you to look for opportunities to connect ... and to participate in life.”
— Dr. Drew

Hannah, I celebrate your intimacy with the Father and the conviction you have to love and fight for people. Thank-you for the beautiful soul you are and the friend you are to me. We can all love more like you.

A Little Island Getaway

August 7, 2016 Shyla Yoder

I spent the last two days on a little island a couple hours from where I live. Ohio is my home, by choice, and one of my absolute favorite places to call my landing. Though my heart gets filled daily by rolling hills, lush fields of summer crops, the mysterious wonder of the wilderness in my backyard and let's not forget the recent proclamation of National Geographic that northeast Ohio, right where I reside, is rated in the top three places in the world to enjoy foliage in autumn(!) - sometimes the soul needs to see a large body of water, to get lost in it, or feel the trepidation of smallness beside a mountainside.

I meant to spend the whole day at the beach on the lake last Saturday, my usual place - Headlands - but it had to be canceled because of a sudden rain forecast. I found  a way to soothe the day and enjoyed good conversation with a friend in a coffee shop - but it was that let-down that led me to think of an alternative. I had just read an article in our local paper giving reason why Lakeside is a great place to vacation for Ohioans looking for an escape. Lakeside is a gated community on the peninsula bordering Lake Eerie. I had heard of it along with the other couple islands off of the peninsula - Put-N-Bay & Kelley's Island. With a bit of research, gladly done by this wander-luster, I found a place that looked just right. Jenn, my coffee shop date, agreed to come with me - vouching that she needed a vacation too!

A few day's later we found ourselves on a ferry to Kelley's Island, putting our feet in the sand, warm sun shining on our bare skin and listening to gorgeous green waves crashing into the shore. We stayed in a gorgeous bed and breakfast on the shore doting east-coast charm, left windows open at night to hear the waves, enjoyed good seafood on the marina, backs on the dock stargazing, and long bike rides along the coast. Both of us looked at each other multiple times during the trip and said, "this is exactly what I needed." The lake did not disappoint.

As I sat on the porch one morning, I thanked Jesus for the water.

[Excerpt from my journal]
There is such a moving effect it has, healing really. The sound, the wind, the waves, the froth, the color... and all the things surrounding it - warmth, sand, sunshine.

I'm eternally grateful for little moments in life like these when you get a little taste of heaven. Long or short - sometimes it's just a quiet moment on a porch when you feel the wind sweep across your face as the sun is just coming up and you feel peace. These are tastes of heaven I believe.. a taste of what we were made for.

I often feel that on trips like this I should ponder some big thought or come home with a new revelation about life; new perspective. I'm grasping for a way to bring that wind-swept peace home with me - to make it last.

I think today, though, I just feel the need to say, "thank-you," close my eyes and feel the wind.

Thank-you Jesus.

... because in reality
you can't capture moments
& you can't fix them in your mind
for the future
... because that involves being in the future

You can only close our eyes &
enjoy right now.

IMAGINE MORE

July 28, 2016 Shyla Yoder

Dear friends,

Sometimes I feel that within our waiting we begin to settle for less in our dreams. We start bargaining with the Lord, "Ok, this may not be possible anymore, but I would at least take this." Or maybe we don't even bargain, we just resolve to letting our dreams diminish.

But, I have felt the Lord say  >  >    IMAGINE MORE.

WHEW.  Yes, I am guilty of the above, and in the past year I have felt the Lord gently confront this thing I have done and let me know that //

// He is in the business of making dreams happen

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.”
— Deuteronomy 7:9

// He is the ORIGINAL dreamer - he can out-dream us any day...

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth....God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”
— Genesis 1
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
— Jeremiah 29:11

// It is in His nature to fulfill PROMISES, and it is his ultimate joy to do so.

“Abram was ninety-nine years old when the Lord appeared to him again and said, “I am God All-Powerful. If you obey me and always do right, 2 I will keep my solemn promise to you and give you more descendants than can be counted.””
— Genesis 17:1-2

Will our dreams look exactly like what we imagine them to be - No. I don't think so. I think that is already proved in most of our lives. But will they be more than we can hope or imagine.... ABSOLUTELY YESS!!! I think that our minds are too small to know just how glorious life can be; our hope poorly lacking (deeply trying to remain but wilting like a half-dead flower). And that God's dreams are so much greater for us than we have imagined. I think he wants us to IMAGINE MORE.

I don't think we should necessarily relinquish our hope completely to the future or what "could be" either. I think the Lord is asking us to IMAGINE MORE in our everyday lives as well.  To let Him paint greater color into it. It is there - because even now, we are in His hands.

Go ahead... dream greater. Let the glory of God fill your imagination and feel the blessing of His hand on your life.

You might be in a season of transition, or life may have turned upside down on you. I encourage you not to blame the circumstances but believe that God is moving things to make way for your dreams. He does truly have your life in His hands. And He will take care of you.

Like the colors in this bouquet - There are so many facets to our journey. Magenta is not just magenta. It is also lavender and jasmine and blue. It needs colors like gold and honey to bring out the richness. And we need faith-filled warriors to breath life into our dreams - to help us to imagine more.

Oh darling, I hope that your soul is awakened and the colors of your dreams come alive to you again. Don't be afraid to ask God for a paintbrush.
