How To Manage Your Energy | The Mom Addendum

April 26, 2019 Shyla Yoder

introduction

I wrote a post a few years ago about time-management in reference to studying ourselves and managing our own unique energy instead of our time. I have always been very aware that it could look wildly different for women at different stages of their lives, especially Moms. So, I have invited a dear friend of mind to add a “Mom Addendum” to this idea. Corrie Reeter is an amazing, practical, goal-oriented woman who is well-versed in many areas of life but has her degree in kinesiology and is a certified physical trainer. Before she had her first little boy, she was training for multiple marathons a year and had discipline as one of the greatest tools in her belt. I am honored to have her share with you, how having a baby changed her world, her priorities and how she still reaches towards her goals every day. I hope this inspires the many mom’s out there who are changing the world more than they know by loving their children and taking care of themselves!

My beautiful friend, and guest blogger, Corrie Reeter with her husband Bill and son Freeland.

You know those easy babies you can just lay on their play mats and they seem content to hang for hours?! Yeah, that has never been my baby... not even for a season. Hi I’m Corrie, new mom, trying to figure out how to mother … and still be a good wife, friend, and goal-getter. Motherhood feels a lot like sinking or swimming... there is no adequate preparation for the change between autonomous and needed 100% of the time!

Here are just a few things that have helped me along the past 4 – months, some are physical steps you can take, some are mindset shifts. But regardless, if they help or not, just know that if, at the end of the day, your babies are alive, fed, and thriving at becoming the little people they are meant to be…that day was successful. If you are a mama, you were created to be that little one’s mama and all the “tips” in the world are only accessories to what you are already fully capable of being!

Okay. So here we go!

TIP ONE | MAKE A TOP 3

I used to write super detailed to-do lists…ordering every hour of the day an assignment. But that was an independent way of life and no longer possible.

Now I write down a “top 3”. I know my son Freeland has to nap (how well and how long and whether it happens in his crib is usually TBD). Once the first nap is underway, I tackle the first thing. If we make it to number two and three it’s been an uncommonly productive day but usually the number one thing does get done... be it workout or laundry or groceries etc...and we count it as a success!

TIP TWO | PREP WHAT YOU CAN!

I prep for the big things (work out, cleaning house, making dinner) with small things I can do with him / while he is awake. If my plan is to work out during his first nap, I bring him in to the bedroom to “help” me make the bed and I put on workout clothes. If the number one thing is getting food prepped or made for later, I pull out ingredients while he hangs out on my hip. If my number one thing is to nap myself, I literally close the blinds and turn on the fan pre-nap time routine! Those small moments add up! If my workout clothes are on, I’m less likely to stall. If the ingredients are out, it’s a quicker toss together! What things can you do with the kids / while the kids are awake that help make the transition to nap time / bed time work that much easier for you?

TIP THREE | BE OKAY WITH WHAT WORKS FOR YOU
(EVEN IF IT’S DIFFERENT THAN WHAT WORKS FOR OTHERS)

I also know what small or big things make the biggest impact on MY day. For me, working out does more for my energy level than half an hour of sleep. Making the bed takes less than 3 minutes but helps our bedroom still feel put together. For me, taking a shower before noon helps me be more productive and less lazy the rest of the day (and yes, that standard has definitely changed since being a mom). For you, it might be working out after early kid bedtime. Don’t let the early risers make you feel bad about it, if that’s what works for you!

TIP FOUR | TAKE ADVANTAGE

Yes, take advantage of free Walmart grocery pick – up, Amazon delivery (Prime if you can), gym child care, and when dad offers to stay home so you can get out…do it!

I used to love grocery shopping but I know in this season, its not worth the stress. Walmart pick up is free (not to mention it keeps me from buying things not on my list which has saved me time and $$$). Amazon has delivered diapers more times than I have bought them in store…thank you 2-day shipping! And although dropping Freeland off at childcare was hard (harder on me then him by far) the hour or two I spend a week at the gym solo, is not just for my benefit, but his. Mom’s need mom-time and if you have a reasonably affordable child care option, take advantage of it!

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU CAN LOOK FOR :

  • YMCA programs or gym child care

  • Mom’s Day Out programs, typically at large churches in town (the Methodist and Baptist seem to be good at this). You do pay for it, but it is a great way to have a morning / afternoon to yourself once a week!

  • If you are military, the Child Youth Services offer hourly child care for $4-$5 an hour. It can be scheduled at any time and used up to 20 hours a week!

  • Kid swap with a friend. I have also taken advantage of this. Do you know someone with kids of similar ages as yours? Swap a 2-hour kid watching session! It’s the cheapest way to get a babysitter!

  • And lastly, don’t forget about dad! He doesn’t babysit, he parents. He probably needs an opportunity to figure things out without you stepping in to help (because let’s be real, how hard is it to NOT STEP IN!). If he says, “go get your nails done” or “go get coffee with a friend” DO IT!

So, there you have it, a very new mom’s take on time management. And here is my little secret, the BIGGEST thing for me, has been the mental shift from success looking like checked boxes on a to-do list, to making my son laugh out loud, or helping him conquer a new skill, or at the end of the day saying,
“today I was just a wife and mother, and that is ENOUGH.”

We had the wonderful excuse to visit the Sunshine State last week with dear friends of ours because of a business meeting. It was so incredibly good for the soul. The weather is still a bit mild in Florida this time of year so we enjoyed many a brisk walk on the beach with warm lattes. It was lovely to fill up the soul without any goals or pressure to tackle a bunch of activities.
My husband’s business partner, Andrew, his wife Mary and their two girls, Olivia & Jocelyn spent the week with us! They are also Ohio natives from the same community we are from and moved to WV along with Wayne before opening up the office together with him. It is a wonderful comfort to have them here with us and they have become the kind of dear friends that are like family. So it was lovely to share a house with them in Anna Maria Island and spend time together!
We took many many walks together on the beach and to the sweetest little town on the island, with stroller and baby in toe, and always sweet Olivia’s hand in someones else’s. Lots of coffee and breakfast were made together, fresh fruit & seafood consumed and splashing and lounging by the pool. We even had the pleasure of grilling one night with other friends that were also in town. I got to spent an afternoon with a dear friend of mine who moved to Florida a year ago & walked the beach with another friend who was celebrating graduating college. I am wonderfully assured that relationship is the best investment we make in this life and the essence of all the deepest beauty in the world. I am reminded of one my favorite quotes, which I think resonates with my focus on love and intimacy.
“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”

Anna Maria Island Travel Guide

I love quaint little Islands where you can walk around from place to place easily. If you are looking for a quiet low-key vacation - Anna Maria Island is the place for you! We stayed near the City Pier/ Holmes beach area. This is the quaintest little town with cute shops and great places to eat. I would recommend staying within walking distance of here.

ACCOMMODATION | Beach Pearl, Vacasa

BEACH | Holmes Beach is lovely and you will likely enjoy any part that you walk out to closest to where you're staying but the further north the beach gets a little smoother.

FOOD

The Donut Experiment | Warm cake donuts ready for your to custom order with toppings like bacon, graham crackers and fruity pebbles.

Ginny & Jane E's Bakery & Cafe | Amazing homemade cinnamon rolls, scones, lots of other pasties, espresso and decadent and hardy breakfast. An eclectic place to sit with the family!

Cortez Cafe | The Locals favorite hardy breakfast diner. Eggs Benedict Specials.

Anna Maria Island Bakery & Creamery | Macarons, gelato, espresso, truffles, & a small selection of pastries (I snagged up a chocolate croissant one day!).

The Sandbar | One of the nicest dining experiences on the beach with amazing seafood. Great for date night although Wayne & I also enjoyed crab cake and scallops for lunch! I would recommend making a reservation.

The Feast | Another amazing seafood and pasta choice without the ambiance of the beach.

Harry's Grill | Great place for burgers, seafood & live music on the patio.

Island Fresh Market | Choose from many of the local seafood markets and pick up some fresh lobster dip for your cheese board. We ate shrimp and cocktail sauce by the pound!

FARMER'S MARKET | There's a wonderful Farmer's Market at Coquina Beach on Sunday's & Wednesday's, check their Facebook page for updates!

An Elegant Dark & Moody Toned Wedding

January 10, 2019 Shyla Yoder
Quintin & Keylea

I had so much fun designing floral art for this wedding! When Keylea described her colors as a plum/ oxblood // almost black shade, I knew it was going to be a fun wedding! It’s so refreshing to do something new and unique and although I tend toward lighter & brighter colors, I can’t say that I don’t LOVE to play with a moody palette as well! We chose to use artichoke as the centerpiece complimented with dark plum continue foliage (the back of which leaf is a beautiful sage), dusty plums like Menthe rose, Cafe Au Lait dahlia and speckled carnation surrounded by deep burgundy amaranth and scabiosa. My favorite piece may have been the scented geranium leaf though with it’s spicy scent and soft fuzzy skin. Succulents & Heuchera leaves were used as boutonniere’s and tied up with hand dyed scarlet silk. The sweetest element of all the beauty I think turned out to be the delicate gold hair clips suited with tiny, ethereal ruby roses for the maids. The wedding was held at the beautiful Pete Dye Golf Course here in Bridgeport, one of my favorite venues to work with. We set up a floral archway at the alter, aisle lined with chair flowers and compotes of deep roses at the front. It was a beautiful autumn day in October.
