My Wedding Flowers

September 12, 2017 Shyla Yoder

As a flower girl, I have been dreaming about the colors and designs of my own wedding flowers for a long time! I started planting peonies and garden roses; experimenting with annuals in just the right shades, since I've been growing, in preparation for this day. Being able to design my own bouquet, and grow flowers for my wedding was incredibly special to me.

These photos are also incredibly special to me. My dear friend, and photographer - Kendra Dawn Photography - shot my wedding with particular attention to the flowers and details of it and I could have cried when I received them. She captured something I poured my heart into for years, beautifully, that will be treasured forever.
Thank-you Kendra.

I hope you'll enjoy this photo-tour of our wedding floral work as you scroll through.

Farm Day at Noreen's Cottage

September 1, 2017 Shyla Yoder
Cottage Farmhouse | Loveshyla.com

I have this dear friend, Noreen, who lives on a cottage farm just an hour west of us and whose presence and home I leave feeling absolutely filled up and enriched by every time I leave.

She's a New Jersey transfer who always felt she would do well on a farm. So when being relocated for her corporate job, adopted a charming white farm house and created a dreamland for herself and her husband Mark (and several animals who reside there as well). The cottage and barn sit nestled into rolling hills with a creek flowing in front so that a bridge is required upon entering the home and a hunderd acres (or two) of wood behind.

What they did with the home is a masterpiece, straight out of a magazine. She carefully curated the touches to resemble that of a cottage farmhouse, with clean, temporary charm. You'll find floral wallpaper in the bedrooms, coordinated with antique furniture, each to suit itself; ethereal and stunning. The kitchen is lined with white, glass door cabinets that give view to beautiful glassware; butcher block in center. All of her tools and appliances, carefully chosen for use and beauty are utilized - she is a talented cook and baker!

On their working farm, you'll find two Clydesdale horses (this is how our connection stems - back to Wayne's days in horse training in Ohio), a Jersey cow named Blossom, dexter cow named Bella, a henhouse of aracauna chickens and guinea hens, two Nigerian dwarf goats, bee hives, peacocks, rabbits, ducks and two Tibetan Mastiff's that run to greet you with their oversized, teddy-bear kindness each time you pull in. From these she gleans fresh milk (she makes soap with her goat's milk), honey & eggs!

Her homestead has a complete cottage garden and greenhouse filled to the brim with fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. A beautiful summer kitchen was established aside the gardens where Noreen does the preserving work in various, artisan creations. She takes so much joy in taking fruit or vegetables directly from the farm and turning it into something magical to the palate. Her favorites are tasty spins on standard fare such as apple walnut conserve, apple cider jelly, chipotle ketchup, salsa, jams of all kinds, hot pepper jelly, tomato sauces, peach butter and much more!  Take a walk through the garden and you'll feel like Beatrix Potter on holiday at the summer house.

Our friendship began as a result of Noreen and Wayne's relationship from the horse industry. They got reconnected when she realized Wayne had moved to West Virginia and he and I started dating. Her and Mark have become fast friends of both of ours and I am so thankful! This summer we established working farm days where I help her with the abundance of chores a farm produces during this time of year.

This time we made grape jam. It was a rainy day, but we happily worked and talked in the summer kitchen and I felt filled up when I left, just as always. (She also sent me home with grape juice to use for whatever I wish to make, fresh eggs, a jar of jam, wonderful roma and heirloom tomatoes and a vase of flowers!)

Thank-you Noreen for sharing your beauty with me!
It was a lovely day on the farm,

My Flower Stand at the Farmer's Market

August 29, 2017 Shyla Yoder
Farmer's Market Flower Stand | Bridgeport, WV

The Bridgeport Farmer's Market was so gracious to grant me a space at the market. This past Sunday we debuted our garden-grown flowers and natural arrangements for Love Shyla and had such wonderful success!

The process of getting ready was invigorating, I felt so excited to re-establish my business here in West Virginia, and so warmly welcomed!

Flower prep started early Saturday morning at dawn when the air was crisp (beginning to feel like autumn) and dew fresh on the ground. After tying my canvas apron around my waste (handmade by my dear friend Sue) I cut flowers on long stems, bucketfuls at a time. Organizing them by color theme, considering how I would arrange them. Each flower had it's leaves and foliage removed for better workability.

When all the flowers were cut, I moved inside, flower buckets filling the room around an empty work table and floral snips in hand. | This is my favorite part. | Having a roomful of living beauty in a vast display of unique colors, shapes and sizes is so invigorating - the art just comes alive - I'm sure you'd feel the same way!

I started with the large vase arrangements, which take the most thought but are one of my favorite results, then moved onto paper-wrapped bouquets, designed for you to arrange yourself, in various assortments and then filled several small vessels with miniature flowers like charms.

Sunday was funday. Flowers all arranged sitting in buckets ready to deliver to the market. We set up with the other vendors while the morning was still quiet, the sweet man beside us who does leather works, made it all the better (he is making a custom braided camera strap for me - ask him for anything leather and he'll be delighted to make it for you).

We enjoyed <each> and <every one> of you who stopped by. It was truly a delight to share our flowers with you. Thank-you for your kind words, letting me hold your babies, chats about weddings, flowers and for each purchase. I hope that your blooms are brightening wherever you reside and make your spirit feel lighter this week.

> Below is a recap of the market bouquets we put together; flower specifications included.
